Ohio State quarterback Will Howard might get a lot of nasty looks from Buckeyes fans and maybe even a few of his own teammates over the next few days after what he did to cost the team the game against Oregon today.
In a back-and-forth fourth quarter of a game with a whopping seven lead changes, Oregon led 32-31. The Buckeyes were driving and were at the Oregon 38-yard line with just five seconds to play. At the snap, Howard felt the pass rush and rather than throw the ball, he tucked it and ran up the middle.
But Howard lost track of the time and when he went down to try and call time out, the ball game was over and Oregon won the game.
As you might expect, Howard is getting absolutely blasted on social media:
“Will Howard trying to run with 4 seconds left might be the worst play in college football history considering he’s getting 500k plus from Ohio state to play qb,” one user on X declared.
“AN INSANELY STUPID PLAY THAT COSTS HIS TEAM THE GAME. AWFUL MISTAKE,” wrote another.
“Will Howard, you are a Dallas Cowboy,” a third user joked.
Howard is going to need a lot of wins to get rid of the stench of that loss.
In the meantime, the Buckeyes are likely going to fall out of the top five entirely. They have a bye next weekend before returning to Columbus for a game against Nebraska.
