On fourth down, with the Ohio State Buckeyes up 21-14, the Texas Longhorns had the ball 1st and Goal from the 1-yard line. But as defensive coordinator Jim Knowles has said all season, if they have one inch, they are going to defend it and defend it they did.
A stuffed run, a blown-up pitch, and a batted-down pass brought the game to 4th and Goal from the 8-yard line. Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers took the snap and almost before he even had a chance to survey the field, his freshman-year roommate Jack Sawyer rushed around the edge and knocked the ball out of his hands.
That in all likelihood would have been enough to salt away the victory, but Sawyer is one of the most devoted and important Buckeyes in recent memory, and he got the type of transcendent moment that will have him living in OSU lore for the rest of time.
The fumbled ball bounced right up into his hands and the 6-foot-5, 260-pound defensive end knew exactly what to do with it. Sawyer, flanked by a handful of other Buckeyes raced the length of the field to score a decisive touchdown, sending the Scarlet and Gray into the College Football Playoff National Championship.
Jack Sawyer, this play, and the entire team will live in the annuls of Ohio State history for as long as this silly, chaotic sport continues to occupy the minds of sports fans around the world, and if you order your t-shirt today, maybe you will be able to wear it that long as well!
