Ohio State’s 3-0 start isn’t enough to satisfy Ryan Day.
The Buckeyes have opened the season with blowout victories over three overmatched non-conference opponents. However, the head coach knows there’s still a long road ahead, starting with Saturday’s Big Ten opener at Michigan State.
On Tuesday, Day was asked if he feels good about his running game after three games.
“I don’t feel good about anything,” Day responded, via David DeGuzman of NBC4 Columbus. “That’s just my mindset; that has to be everybody’s mindset. You start to feel good about something, and complacency can sneak up on you fast. So no, nobody feels good about anything. I think we’re building confidence in it though.”
The Buckeyes have gained 723 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns behind the dynamic backfield duo of TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins. They’re averaging 7.0 yards per carry, but it’s hard for Day and OSU fans to get too excited considering the competition.
Ohio State has opened the season by scoring 157 combined points against Akron, Western Michigan, and Marshall. It’s hardly a daunting schedule for a program with championship aspirations.
The Buckeyes will play their first of nine Big Ten battles when facing the Spartans at East Lansing. They’re 24-point favorites, but the matchup represents a bit more of a litmus test for the nation’s No. 3 team.
“It’s always about us,” Day said. “We say that the opponent doesn’t matter. But all that being said, going on the road against a conference opponent is a big deal.”
Saturday’s game will stream exclusively on Peacock at 7 p.m. ET.
