Ohio State lost a backfield depth piece before the 2024 season.
Courtesy of Eleven Warriors’ Dan Hope, Ryan Day confirmed at Tuesday’s Big Ten Media Days that TC Caffey is out with a season-ending injury. David Biddle of Bucknuts reported earlier this month that the running back suffered his second significant knee injury.
Caffey joined Ohio State as a walk-on in 2022. He saw his only playing time in two games that fall.
The Ohio native tallied 49 of his 66 yards on a late touchdown to punctuate a 77-21 blowout win over Toldeo on Sept. 17. He also fielded four handoffs for nine yards in a 49-20 victory over Michigan State.
However, an ACL tear cost Caffey the rest of the 2022 season and all of 2023. He was working his way back before suffering another gutting setback.
Caffey would have comfortably begun 2024 behind the Buckeyes’ prolific backfield tandem of TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins. Henderson returns for his senior year after averaging 5.9 yards per carry with 11 rushing touchdowns last season, and Judkins transferred to Ohio State after accruing 1,158 rushing yards and 15 scores at Ole Miss.
While Caffey faced an uphill climb to earning playing time, Day spoke fondly of him earlier this year.
“The other guy who’s been very, very good in there and I think is going to play for us and get carries for us is TC Caffey,” Day said in early April. “He’s done a very good job, he’s very disciplined in his approach, and he’s a guy that can really bring value for us.”
