Ohio State picked up a statement win over Indiana this Saturday, but Ryan Day may have hurt his reputation in the process.
With under two minutes in the game and Ohio State leading 31-15, running back TreVeyon Henderson broke off a long run before sliding down at Indiana’s one-yard line. He was clearly trying to show respect for his opponent and let the Buckeyes kneel out the clock. Day, however, had other plans. The veteran coach called back-to-back quarterback sneaks for Will Howard. Eventually, the talented signal-caller got across the goal line to extend Ohio State’s lead.
When asked about the late touchdown against Indiana, Day replied, “We said leave no doubt … We wanted to finish it the right way and make sure that everybody knows that this is The Ohio State Buckeyes.”
Day might have won style points this afternoon with the 38-15 win over Indiana. On the flip side, he lost respect from football fans around the country.
“Ryan Day from OSU is such a piece of [expletive],” one fan said. “His running back stops at the 1 yard line to not run up the score on Indiana (class kid) but he has his QB try to sneak it in twice with less than a minute left. Jerk. Period.”
Another fan asked, “Why would Ryan Day run up the score when Indiana wasn’t using their timeouts accepting defeat?”
“I usually don’t really care about running the score up, but Ryan Day is wrong for that,” a third fan wrote.
“Disgusting move by Ryan Day coming from an Ohio State fan,” a fourth person commented.
Ohio State looked like a true national title contender this Saturday against Indiana, make no mistake about it. Unfortunately, Day’s decision to run up the score has tainted how people are talking about this game.
It’ll be interesting to hear what Indiana coach Curt Cignetti has to say about Ohio State showing no mercy.
