The Ohio State Buckeyes kept their streak of landing top wide receiving prospects going by landing 2024’s top overall prospect Jeremiah Smith and the early returns on the freshman are looking very promising.
Through two games, Smith already has 11 receptions for 211 yards and three touchdowns. He’s already on pace for well over 1,000 yards and double-digit touchdowns.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day made it clear that Smith has the ambition to be even better than he already is. Day said that Smith already has great intangibles and doesn’t need to be told much as it is.
“He’s disciplined,” Day said Tuesday. “This is not somebody who I think needs to be told, ‘Hey, reel it in.’ I mean, he stays very focused. If we recognize anything other, then we’ll address it.
“But he wants to be great. He knows what he wants to get done. I think he would tell you like, ‘This is just the start as well.’ I think he’s always envisioned himself in this role and having an impact like this, right from the jump. We talked about that during the recruiting process.”
247Sports rated Smith as the No. 1 overall prospect in the Class of 2024 after a standout career as both a receiver and a track star. Analyst Andrew Irvins gave him a pro comparison to seven-time Pro Bowler and Alabama legend Julio Jones.
The trajectory is certainly pointing very high for Smith and what’s crazier is that he’s only a freshman.
