Winning the national championship has already opened up plenty of doors for Ohio State’s Ryan Day.
After losing to Michigan for the fourth time in a row in the regular season finale, Day’s seat was scorching. There were portions of the Ohio State fanbase that had totally given up on the veteran head coach, with some fans taking things to the extreme. Day and his family reportedly received threats and had to enlist private 24-hour security at their house.
All of that changed after the Buckeyes reeled off wins over Tennessee, Oregon, Texas and Notre Dame to win their first national championship in a decade. Day earned himself some vindication with this title, especially considering so many people thought he couldn’t do it.
Becoming a national champion has other perks as well, like an invite to one of the most prestigious golf courses in the world. During an appearance on The Triple Option podcast with Rob Stone, Mark Ingram and Urban Meyer this week, Day and Meyer had a brief back-and-forth about who would win if they played golf and tennis.
It was at that point that Day strongly hinted–with Meyer’s help–that he will have the chance to play Augusta soon.
“Can possibly play a big time course here in the next couple months, so I gotta get my game going a little,” Day said.
“Like the one down in Georgia?” Meyer asked.
“Yea, it looks like maybe there might be an opportunity. So I can’t screw that one up,” Day said.
That’s for sure, Coach. Playing Augusta is an opportunity you don’t want to blow.
Following OSU’s win over Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff National Championship, Day was rewarded with a contract extension through the 2031 season.
With his new deal, Day will make $12.5 million per season, making him the second highest-paid head coach in the country behind Georgia’s Kirby Smart.
What a difference a couple of months make.
