Ryan Day has assembled an assortment of talent for Ohio State’s 2024 football roster. That doesn’t mean the head coach feels he has a perfect team.
Per Chase Brown and Dan Hope of Eleven Warriors, Day discussed some spots he’s focused on addressing this summer. He identified quarterback and the “right side” of the offensive line as some potential question marks.
Day is also aiming to improve the program’s depth at safety, defensive tackle, and wide receiver before starting the season.
After going 11-1 as Ohio State’s starting quarterback, Kyle McCord transferred to Syracuse this offseason. The Buckeyes responded by landing Will Howard through the portal.
The former Kansas State starter has an experience advantage entering his fifth year. Howard will look to fend off Devin Brown and incoming freshman Air Noland for the QB1 job when Ohio State opens the season against Akron on Aug. 31.
Ohio State added former Alabama starting center Seth McLaughlin, but some other spots remain question marks for Day this summer. According to Hope, Day said he explored potential transfer options this spring, but he didn’t find the right fit.
While Josh Fryar could return as the right tackle after starting all 13 games last year, Day would feel comfortable sliding the senior over to right guard. The head coach is also optimistic about how his younger linemen have progressed this spring.
The Buckeyes ranked second behind Michigan with 11.2 points allowed per game last year, but defensive tackle Michael Carter Jr. and safety Josh Proctor were among some notable players to leave Columbus.
Star transfer Caleb Downs will headline a safety group adding four-star recruit Garrett Stover. Though it’s hardly an area for concern with Quinshon Judkins joining a returning TreVeyon Henderson, Day said Downs is attending meetings with running backs and could play some snaps there in 2024.
