Ohio State fans will like what their former coach Urban Meyer about the Buckeyes this week.
Fresh off blowout wins over Tennessee and Oregon in the first and second rounds of the College Football Playoff, Ohio State will meet Texas in the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Cotton Bowl on Friday night. With a win, the Buckeyes will move on to face either Penn State or Notre Dame for the national championship.
After Ohio State lost to Michigan in its regular season finale, there were many fans and pundits who wrote Ryan Day’s team off. On “The Triple Option” podcast Monday, Meyer said if the Buckeyes continue playing at the level they did against the Volunteers and Ducks, Day will win the national title.
“If Team-A shows up, this will be a wrap. Ohio State will lift the gold trophy,” Meyer said. “If the best roster in the country plays like the best roster in the country, they’ll be national champs in a few weeks.”
Meyer went on to say that OSU’s 25-point win over Tennessee and 20-point victory over Oregon were worse than even those lopsided scores indicated. He also credited Day and his staff with making one major change to help their team hit its stride.
“My understanding is Ohio State simplified things with the offensive line. That’s the one area that has struggled,” Meyer explained.
Should Ohio State win the next two games, it will make back-to-back national titles for the Big Ten after Michigan won last year. That accomplishment would be a point in favor of Meyer’s recent argument that the SEC”s dominance has been ended, or at least halted.
“Is the SEC’s dominance over? It is. It’s over,” Meyer said. “Now, next year’s another year. But for two years, it’s over.”
Texas and Ohio State will meet in the Cotton Bowl Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ET. ESPN will have the broadcast.
