The Cleveland Guardians placed Carlos Carrasco on the 15-day injured list Friday due to a left hip strain. Carrasco, 37, suffered the injury during his start against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday, during which he allowed four runs across 4 1/3 innings. The right-hander will be eligible to be reinstated on August 23, but it’s yet to be determined how long he will be sidelined.
The Guardians also optioned infielder/outfielder Angel Martinez to Triple-A Columbus. In their places, Cleveland recalled outfielder Will Brennan and reliever Peter Strzelecki from Columbus. Left-hander Joey Cantillo was also called up as the 27th man for Cleveland’s doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins.

Carlos Carrasco Out with Hip Injury
Carrasco lands on the IL for the second time this season. He opened the year on the 15-day injured list due to neck spasms after signing a minor league deal to return to Cleveland this past offseason. Carrasco is currently second on the team in games started, only behind Tanner Bibee. Carrasco has been a consistent pitcher in the rotation this season. However, his results aren’t what they were years ago. He has thrown 103 2/3 innings with a dismal 5.64 ERA. His 19.9 percent strikeout rate goes with his 7.4 percent walk rate, which is slightly better than average.
Carrasoc’s absence will test the depth of Cleveland’s pitching. They already lost Shane Bieber (Tommy John surgery) and have seen Logan Allen and Triston struggle as they are both in Columbus. The Guardians did acquire Alex Cobb at the trade deadline and signed Matthew Boyd, who is wrapping up his rehab from Tommy John surgery. Cobb is will make his season debut tonight. Cleveland’s rotation could include Bibee, Cobb, Boyd, Gavin Williams and Ben Lively. There is potential for this to work even if it’s not a dominant rotation, but the Guardians have one of the best bullpens in baseball.
