News and Notes for Monday, April 21st, 2025
The Guardians return to Progressive Field to play the AL Pennant Defending and AL East leading New York Yankees tonight. …The bigger they are, the harder they fall.
The Guardians survived a hiccup in the bottom of the ninth yesterday to sweep the Pirates with a 5-4 extra inning win.
Steven Kwan hit a two-run homer:
And Kyle Manzardo hit a two-run homer (off a lefty!):
And Logan Allen pitched excellently again. Nicole has your game recap here.
Tim Stebbins of MLB.com’s Guardians coverage had a nice little piece on C.J. Kayfus. He also had a good article wrapping up the Pirates’ sweep.
The Athletic’s Zack Meisel has his usual good notes on the team, including picking up on Emmanuel Clase’s increased slider usage on Sunday. I do think that’s part of the path back to dominance for him.
So, I don’t know about you all, but I love me a good baseball podcast. The gold standard for Guardians’ podcasts is Selby is Godcast featuring T.J. Zuppe and Zack Meisel. I’ve also recently really enjoyed the Die Hard Guards Podcast featuring Brent Messett and his family. I hope you’re all aware of the Disgusting Baseball Podcast featuring writers and friends of our site here. Outside of pure Guardians’ content, my favorite baseball podcasts are the Baseball Bar-B-Cast, the Baseball Roundtable part of the Athletic’s Windup podcasts, and the Effectively Wild Podcast. I am obsessed with Effectively Wild’s latest longform journalism series on Ella Black, the first female national baseball writer; check out the final part of that great series here. Please share some of your favorite pods in the comments below, be they Guardians or baseball overall.
AROUND MLB:
The Royals beat the Tigers, and the Twins lost to the Braves.
The Reds scored 24 runs against the Orioles and Charlie Morton.
The Padres’ Luis Arraez had to get carted off the field after a collision at first base and is in stable condition in the hospital. We wish him well.
